Chief of the Mount Sinai Medical Center Department of Neurology and Medical Director of the Mount Sinai Comprehensive Stroke Center, Dr. Steven Resnick, DO, is Board certified in Neurology and Psychiatry, Board Certified in Vascular Neurology, and a Diplomat of the American Board of Neurology and Psychiatry. Dr. Resnick fellowship specializes in Neuromuscular disorders, with special qualifications in Nerve Study and EMG. Resnick holds special board certification through the American Society of Neuroimaging (ASN), and additional fellowships in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Neurosonology.

Resnick is a specialist and one of the leading Neurologists statewide to utilize the treatment of Botulinum Toxin (BOTOX) for vast Neurological disorders to include migraine, dystonia and spasticity. Serving over twelve years as Stroke Director, Dr. Resnick led the Harvey R. Chaplin Family Stroke and Chest Pain Center at Mount Sinai Medical Center to earn the esteemed designation as a Comprehensive Stroke Center. Additionally, under Resnick’s leadership, the American Heart Association granted the Chaplin Stroke center a Gold Plus Performance Achievement Award. This top honor demonstrates the center’s Stroke performance indicator and quality measures. Dr. Resnick co-authored a textbook entitled, Practical Neuroimaging in Stroke, and has published articles in the Journal of the Peripheral Nervous System, the Journal of Neurology and the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry. He has lectured extensively on stroke prevention, acute ischemic stroke, practical neuroimaging in cerebrovascular disease and other related topics. Clinical research includes studies of drug therapies to treat Neuromuscular diseases. Dr. Resnick graduated Emory University with a B.S in Biology and later went on to receive a Master’s degree (M.A.) in Biomedical Science at Barry University. Resnick attended Nova Southeastern University School of Medicine. He completed his Internal Medicine and Neurology residency at the University of Miami- Jackson Memorial Hospital. Dr. Resnick continued his training at the University of Miami-Jackson Memorial with a combined Neuromuscular fellowship. Dr. Resnick has guest lectured at Nova Southeastern University School of Medicine, Barry University, the University of Miami and Miami-Dade College. Dr. Resnick continues to teach students, residents and fellows both in Internal Medicine, Emergency Room physicians, and Psychiatry. Dr. Resnick treats patients at both the Mount Sinai and Bay Harbor offices, in addition to caring for his patients in the hospital and taking emergency calls in the evenings for MSMC. Dr. Resnick is bilingual in English and Spanish.

Dr. Andrew Kovacs, MD

Neurologist, MOUNT SINAI MEDICAL CENTER

Dr. Andrew Kovacs is a practicing Neurologist for over 40 years. Kovacs is trained in Electromyography (EEG), Nerve Study, and Electromyography (EMG). Dr. Kovacs is a past director of the EEG department at Mount Sinai Medical Center. Dr. Kovacs has over 40 years of experience behind him and holds a strong esteemed reputation of excellence in care of his patience. Dr. Kovacs completed his Medical education at Semmelweisz University of Medical Sciences in Budapest, Hungary. From there, he trained at St. Janos Hospital and Peterfly Hospital in Budapest, Hungary. Kovacs completed his Neurology Residency at the University of Miami School of Medicine followed by a Fellowship in Clinical Stroke at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Before starting his own practice in 1998, Dr. Kovacs was a partner at the esteemed Baumel-Eisner NeuroMedical Institute in Miami Beach for over 15 years. Kovacs treats patients at both the Bal Harbor and Mount Sinai Medical Center offices and continues to see patients in the hospital. Kovacs speaks Hungarian, English and some Russian.

GEORGE A. GONZALEZ, M.D.

GEORGE A. GONZALEZ M.D. recently joined the practice of Resnick and Kovacs. Board Certified in Neurology and Psychiatry, Dr. Gonzalez is an outstanding new member of the team. He brings years of experience in all aspects of general Neurology and is a specialist in Clinical Neurophysiology including Electroencephalography (EEG), Electromyography (EMG), and epilepsy.

Dr. Gonzalez completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Florida with a BA in History followed by a post-Baccalaureate Medical program at the University of Miami. Dr. Gonzalez attended Universidad Central del Caribe School of Medicine in Bayamon, Puerto Rico for Medical School and earned a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) in 2002. For his Medical training, Dr. Gonzalez trained in Internal Medicine at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Puerto Rico and then returned to Miami for his Residency in Neurology at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital. Following that, Gonzalez completed his Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship at the University of Massachusetts in 2007. Dr. Gonzalez spent 2007-2019 in private practice in historic Concord, Massachusetts. During his tenure in Concord, he was Co-Chair of the Emerson Hospital Stroke Committee and brought Emerson to earn the status of a Gold Plus Hospital in 2016. He was responsible for coordinating a multi-disciplinary approach to stoke care at Emerson. In addition, he served as the Neurology Service chief at Emerson. A native Cuban-Miamian, Dr. Gonzalez is happy to return to his native roots and join the team at Mount Sinai Medical Center seeing patients in private practice and in the hospital.

Dr. Gonzalez is fluent in English and Spanish, and has basic understanding in Creole.
